The final score was 83-66 in the University of Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball team triumph over the Utah Utes on with more than 14,250 people in seats at McKale Center, but for the Department of Medicine’s Rachna Shroff, MD, MS, and her family, it was a triple-digit, sold-out win for the ages.
A Tucson native, the professor and Division of Hematology & Oncology chief at the U of A College of Medicine – Tucson and interim clinical affairs director and associate director of clinical investigations at the U of A Cancer Center, Dr. Shroff was the center of attention for a few moments six minutes into the second half of the game as she was featured on the jumbotron as an “Arizona Champion.”
She said, “It was an incredible experience! I have been a Wildcat basketball fan since I was a kid, so being honored there made the whole experience so special.”
Joining her at the game were, in addition to her husband, Puneet Shroff, MD, an allergist and immunologist in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, their two children and Rachna’s mother.
The Wildcats, meanwhile, finished the season at 20-10 overall and 14-5 in their inaugural season as part of the Big 12 athletic conference, clinching a top-4 seed in the Big 12 tournament that begins March 11.
