Internal Medicine First Choice for Match Day Surprises

Shawn Ong, a medical student at the UA College of Medicine - Tucson, was first up to declare where he was headed for his physician residency on Friday, March 18, during the National Resident Matching Program announcements held simultaneously at medical schools across the country. 

Ong is headed to Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut where he'll complete his residency in Internal Medicine. 

He was among 99 participating Tucson medical students who start their post-graduate training at hospitals far and wide. Most students were notified by cellphone messaging about which of their picks they won just prior to the traditional envelope ceremony, but many didn't look to maintain the surprise.

A number of residents chose to stay here in Tucson to work at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson and South — the two primary teaching hospitals and clinical facilities for the UA Health Sciences colleges. 

The theme of this year's skits for the Match Day celebrations was "Netflix and Match," with most students divvied up by the specialty of their choice choosing a game show and reality TV theme. Among these were "Survivor," "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader," "Jeopardy," "Family Feud," "Bachelorette" and "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."

Residents finished the ceremony off with everyone onstage for a group selfie photo. Most residencies generally begin July 1.
