SPEAKER: Janis E. Blair, MD, Professor of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale
TOPIC: "Coccidioidomycosis in Transplantation"
Dr. Blair is a professor of medicine and director of the internal medicine residency program at the Mayo Clinic, in Scottsdale, Ariz. She also is affiliated with Mayo's Center for Regenerative Medicince. She holds a bachelor's degree in biology/chemistry from Point Loma College (now Point Loma Nazarene University), in San Diego. Her medical degree is from the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine. She did her internship and residency in internal medicine at Los Angeles County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and completed her fellowship in infectious diseases at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She was on the 16-member panel that updated the “2016 Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) Clinical Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Coccidioidomycosis” released this summer. This event is hosted as part of the Medicine Grand Rounds lectures by the UA Department of Medicine. The Annual Farness Lecture series is named for Orin J. Farness, MD, a Tucson physician, who—in 1938—was the first to report a positive culture for coccidioidomycosis (cocci or Valley Fever), a fungal disease caused by spores found in the soil that primarily affects the lungs and which is endemic to the U.S. Southwest.
