Serpil Erzurum, MD, a world-renowned translational scientist on respiratory diseases from the Cleveland Clinic/Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, had them in the aisles for the final Winter Lung Series Conference for the 2016-17 academic year. With a full audience, late attendees either stood or sat on steps.
Her lecture doubled as the March installment for the DOM Research Seminar Series. She is pictured at right with University of Arizona Department of Medicine Chair Monica Kraft, MD.
“Metabolism and Hypoxia in Pulmonary Vascular Disease” was the title of the address by Dr. Erzurum, who originally was to give the talk a year earlier but whose 2016 flight was canceled due to bad winter weather in the Midwest. During her presentation, she complimented research done into pulmonary arterial hypertension at the UA. For an archived video of her lecture, click here.
Dr. Erzurum is a professor and chair of the Department of Pathobiology at the Lerner Research Institute and the Alfred Lerner Memorial Chair in Innovation Biomedical Research at the Case Western University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. She is also a staff physician at the Respiratory Institute and director of the Clinical Research Unit at the Cleveland Clinic, as well as the chair for the Assembly on Allergy, Immunology and Inflammation at the American Thoracic Society.
The Winter Lung Series Conferences (WLSC), held in conjunction with the UA Health Sciences Asthma and Airway Disease Research Center and UA BIO5 Institute, brings in nationally and internationally renowned physician-scientists to discuss the latest research in various fields of pulmonary medicine and share those emerging ideas and clinical advances with our faculty, fellows and residents in training at the UA Health Sciences colleges, as well as community physicians. The DOM Research Seminar Series began in September 2016 as a monthly showcase of advanced research being done in the UA Department of Medicine. It typically features a junior and senior investigator from different divisions—14 divisions in all covering subspecialties from cardiology to rheumatology as well as research specific divisions on genetics, genomics and translational medicine—to offer a range of topics of interest to a broad audience.
