University of Arizona Department of Medicine Chair Monica Kraft, MD, was chosen to join the prestigious Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program as a fellow for its Class of 2017-18.
Also recently elected as a Fellow of the European Respiratory Society—an honorary title for career accomplishments, Dr. Kraft is the ninth UA College of Medicine faculty member to participate in the ELAM fellowship program. That includes eight from the COM – Tucson and one from the COM – Phoenix campuses.
ELAM is a core program of the Institute for Women's Health and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. The institute continues the legacy of advancing women in medicine that began in 1850 with the founding of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania—the nation's first women's medical school and a predecessor of today's Drexel University College of Medicine.
The year-long, part-time fellowship for women faculty in schools of medicine, dentistry and public health is dedicated to developing the professional and personal skills required to lead and manage in today's complex health care environment, with special attention to the unique challenges facing women in leadership positions. More than 1,000 ELAM alumnae hold leadership positions in institutions around the world.
In addition to other programming, the fellowship involves three week-long onsite training sessions. Dr. Kraft will be working on assignments and readings throughout the year, participating in the e-leadership online curriculum, and communicating regularly with ELAM colleagues.
Among the fellowship's alumnae are 11 of 28 women deans at medical schools), 114 center directors at medical schools, 145 associate/senior associate/vice deans at medical schools and 142 department chairs at medical schools. Fifteen percent of alumnae identify as racial or ethnic minorities. Five have come from schools outside of North America.
