Incoming University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson residents, chief residents and fellows joined each other Friday, June 23, for the Banner – UMC New Resident Orientation event hosted by the Marriott Tucson University Park Hotel.
According to the COM - Tucson Graduate Medical Education Office, there are 711 residents in various training programs across all departments at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson and South clinical facilities – 630 at Tucson Campus and 81 at South Campus. Of those, the largest program overall is the UA Internal Medicine Residency Programs, which have 93 residents at the Tucson Campus program and 31 at the South Campus program.
The orientation event is an annual rite of passage where they hear from a variety of clinical and academic faculty and staff about what to expect and what’s expected of them.
In addition, they get to try on white coats for sizing purposes.
They also hear from patients about their clinical experiences with a little advice on how to make that better from the patient, nurse and physician perspective.
Among those from the UA Department of Medicine who were among presenters were:
- Gordon Carr, MD, a UA critical care specialist and chief medical officer for Banner – UMC Tucson, who along with South Campus CMO David Sheinbein, MD, welcomed everyone and mapped out the day,
- Roberto Swazo, MD, UA Internal Medicine Residency Program – South Campus (PGY3), on “What I Wish I Knew,”
- a “Residents Panel Q&A” with Chief Residents (including Internal Medicine's), and
- Pradeep Kadambi, MD, a UA nephrologist and medical director, Solid Organ Transplantation Program, on the “Importance of Documentation & Coding”
