[Richard H. Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS]Prevention, Preparedness, Plagues and Politics: The Life of the Surgeon General will be the topic of the University of Arizona Department of Surgery Grand Rounds presentation by Richard Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS, 17th U.S. Surgeon General (2002-2006).

The talk will be held Wednesday, May 7, 8-9 a.m., in DuVal Auditorium, University of Arizona Medical Center, 1501 N. Campbell Ave. Dr. Carmona also is professor of surgery, UA College of Medicine – Tucson, and distinguished professor of public health, UA Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.

In 2002, Dr. Carmona was nominated by then-President George W. Bush, and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate, to become the 17th Surgeon General of the United States. As Surgeon General, Dr. Carmona focused on prevention, emergency preparedness, health disparities, health literacy and global health issues.  He also delivered many landmark reports and communications during his tenure, including the definitive Surgeon General’s Report regarding the dangers of second-hand smoke.
 
After completing his statutory four-year term as Surgeon General, Dr. Carmona was named vice chairman of Canyon Ranch, president of the non-profit Canyon Ranch Institute and distinguished professor at the UA’s Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.
