Ernest R. Vina, MD, an assistant professor of medicine in the University of Arizona Division of Rheumatology and UA Arthritis Center member, recently was quoted in MedPage Today about significant research findings detailed in a paper he wrote that was published in the latest issue of Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism.
The paper, “Race, Sex and Risk Factors in Radiographic Worsening of Knee Osteoarthritis,” appears in journal issue for Aug. 31. Dr. Vina is principal author on the article with other UA Arthritis Center colleagues, Di Ran, Erin L. Ashbeck, MPH, Charles Ratzlaff, PhD, PT, and C. Kent Kwoh, MD, as co-authors.
Dr. Vina's research details the risk of knee osteoarthritis progression based upon race and gender. His findings in Seminars in Arthritis & Rheumatism underscore the need for race- and gender-specific interventions for specific populations. They were generated by a longitudinal study reported in the journal that concludes black men are at greater risk for radiographic progression of knee osteoarthritis than black women and whites of both genders.
He’s quoted in MedPage Today on Sept. 8 as saying, “Our current findings will assist us in tailoring how to approach and manage patients at risk based on their likely risk factors.”

Dr. Vina joined the faculty at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson in 2014. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychobiology from UCLA in 1999 and his medical doctorate from the Chicago medical school at Rosalind Franklin University in 2004. He completed his internal medicine residency at Los Angeles’ Cedars Sinai Medical Center, where he also completed a health services research fellowship. His rheumatology fellowship was completed at the University of Chicago Medical Center in 2011, where he also earned a master's degree in health studies.
Prior to coming to the UA, Dr. Vina served as an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and as a staff rheumatologist in the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. He was also the core investigator at the VAPHS Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion, a VA center of excellence.
Dr. Vina’s research interests include racial disparities in systemic lupus erythematosus, treatment preferences, racial disparities in osteoarthritis, quality of care and health services. He is a member of the American College of Rheumatology, American College of Physicians, American Medical Association and Society for Medical Decision Making.
Board certified in internal medicine and rheumatology, he has authored numerous publications on racial and ethnic disparities and treatment preferences in systemic lupus erythematosus among other subjects.
