Eleven of about 36 awards presented at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson’s 38th Annual Faculty Teaching Awards and the Vernon and Virginia Furrow Awards went to faculty in the UA Department of Medicine.
In addition to the awards, Bruce Coull, MD, presenter for the College of Medicine – Tucson’s Professionalism Program and a professor of neurology, also named 21 individual faculty members, residents, students and staff who were recognized for “their exemplary professionalism.”

Patrons of Professionalism
Among the 21 singled out were: Omavi Bailey, MD, MPH, a fellow in the UA Sleep Medicine Fellowship; James Bardwell, DO, a resident in the UA Internal Medicine Residency Program – South Campus; Kevin Moynahan, MD, a professor in the Division of Geriatrics, General Internal Medicine and Palliative Medicine and deputy dean for education in the UA College of Medicine – Tucson, and Andrew Zhou, MD, a resident with the UA Internal Medicine Residency Program – Tucson Campus. Dr. Moynahan was one of the presenters at the ceremony.

DOM Winners
Amy Sussman, MD, won four awards, the first two of which (listed below) she learned about in just the past few days.
■ Furrow Award for Excellence in Basic Science Teaching in the Undergraduate Medical Curriculum
■ Outstanding Achievement in Teaching by a Clerkship
■ Educator of the Year – Years 3 and 4
■ Outstanding Teacher in a Block – Year 1 (Cardiovascular, Pulmonary & Renal Systems, Department of Medicine)
Dr. Sussman is an associate professor in the UA Division of Nephrology, the UA Nephrology Fellowship program director, the department vice chair for education and the department clerkship director. She also was one of three to win the Dean’s List for Excellence in Teaching, Year I Award in 2016 for the Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, & Renal Systems Block; and won a Basic Science Educator Award in 2012, 2013 and 2015.
John Bloom, MD, won two awards.
■ Basic Science Educator of the Year – LIFETIME AWARD
■ Outstanding Achievement in Teaching by a Block - Year 1 (Cardiovascular, Pulmonary & Renal Systems, Department of Medicine)
Dr. Bloom is an associate professor of pharmacology and medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. He also won the Outstanding Teacher in a Block Year I Award as well as the Outstanding Achievement in Teaching by a Block Year I Award for the Cardiovascular, Pulmonary & Renal Systems Block in 2016, and has won Basic Science Educator Awards in 2012, 2013 and 2015.
The lifetime award is not given every year. It recognizes three-time recipients for Basic Science Educator of the Year, Clinical Science Educator of the Year and Houseofficer Educator of the Year. Lifetime award winners names are retired from future consideration for these awards.
Dr. Bloom is the first from the Department of Medicine to receive this honor and was presented with a chair in recognition of the achievement. Previous recipients of the Clinical Science Educator of the Year Lifetime Award include Dr. Moynahan (2002) and William P. Johnson, MD (19988).
Joao Paulo Ferreira, MD, assistant professor, Division of Inpatient Medicine, won one award.
■ Dean's List for Excellence in Teaching – Years 3 and 4
For the following award, three faculty members won:
■ Dean's List for Excellence in Teaching – Year 2
- Erika Bracamonte, MD, associate professor, Department of Pathology — Cardiovascular, Pulmonary & Renal Systems Block
- Randy Horwitz, MD, associate professor, Division of Integrative Medicine — Doctor & Patient Course, Societies Program, Department of Medicine
- Tirdad Zangeneh, DO, associate professor, Division of Infectious Diseases — Immunity & Infection Block, Department of Medicine
Two clinical instructors also won in the following category:
■ Dean's List for Excellence in Teaching by a Houseofficer
- Laith Ghazala, MD, Department of Medicine (Past Chief Resident, Internal Medicine – Tucson Campus)
- Sarah Low, MD, Department of Medicine (Intern Resident, Internal Medicine – Tucson Campus)
Both graduated or completed their program requirements this past summer. Voting, however, included medical students from last year who also graduated this past spring.
