The Yuma Friends of the University of Arizona Health Sciences will host a free public presentation on Thursday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m., at the Goodwill Yuma Career Center, 3097 S. Eighth Ave., Yuma, Ariz.
The lecture, “Osteoarthritis Under the Microscope,” will be presented by C. Kent Kwoh, MD, director of the University of Arizona Arthritis Center.
During his lecture, Dr. Kwoh will discuss new information on the causes of osteoarthritis and how to prevent the disorder, which affects 53 million men, women and children in the United States. He will offer a preview of new treatments on the horizon and other findings his research team has used to gain a greater understanding of the development of the disease, its progression and key risk factors for disease development.
Osteoarthritis, the most common cause of disability in the United States, is a complex condition that involves the breakdown of cartilage in joints and changes in the adjacent soft tissue and bone beneath the cartilage.
Dr. Kwoh is the Charles A.L. and Suzanne M. Stephens Endowed Chair in Rheumatology, chief of the Division of Rheumatology and professor of medicine and medical imaging at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson. The lecture is part of a series of free talks hosted by the Yuma Friends of the University of Arizona Health Sciences.
