Fred DuVal to Keynote College of Medicine – Tucson Convocation, May 10

Fred DuValFred DuVal, son of the founding dean of the UA College of Medicine – Tucson, will keynote the 2018 Doctor of Medicine convocation ceremony.

DuVal is a longtime supporter of the college.

“Fred has the distinction of literally growing up with our medical school given the role of his father, Monte DuVal, as the founding Dean of the UA College of Medicine,” said Charles Cairns, MD, dean of the college. “I am confident that our students, faculty, staff and guests will connect with his message at convocation and be inspired by his accomplishments.”

Over the years, DuVal has remained a major advocate for the college and the University of Arizona. He served on the board of University Medical Center (now Banner – UMC) and as chairman of the Arizona Board of Regents.

In addition, DuVal has spent over 35 years in politics and public affairs. He served as senior staff aide to Governor Bruce Babbitt (1980-86); as deputy assistant secretary of state (1993-96); and later as White House deputy assistant to the president for state government affairs (1997-99). In this role, he was responsible for the policy relationship between the federal government and the 50 states and governors, including welfare reform, transportation, education and other issues.

DuVal has written two books on Arizona and many opinion pieces, most regarding the future of the University of Arizona and the College of Medicine.

DuVal’s keynote address is titled, “In the beginning … ”

The 2018 Convocation Ceremony will take place at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 10, in UA Centennial Hall, located at 1020 E. University Blvd. The event will be livestreamed at Facebook.com/UACOMTucson.
