Trauma is any injury to the body by an outside source of energy. It can be as minor as a cut or as serious as the worst injuries sustained from a car crash, fall or gunshot wound. In the U.S., trauma is the leading cause of death, exceeding cancer and heart disease combined. Hear Keynote speaker Deborah Kuhls, MD, as she recounts lessons learned from the Las Vegas mass shooting.
Medical advancements and public health efforts have made an impact on this challenging problem, but injuries still remain the greatest silent epidemic of modern society. The 29th Annual Southwest Regional Trauma Conference, Thursday and Friday, August 2-3, at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa, 3800 W. Starr Pass Blvd., Tucson, aims to deliver the most current information on trauma and its management to all healthcare professionals working to combat this major health problem. Two concurrent sessions along with several general sessions are offered each day.
There also will be a “Stop the Bleed” course offered. There’s nothing more tragic than a death from trauma than a death that could have been prevented. Uncontrolled bleeding from any cause can result in death in as little as five or ten minutes. The Stop the Bleed course teaches the general public basic techniques to control bleeding using hands, dressings and tourniquets. Learning to control life-threatening bleeding is as an important of a skill to have as knowing how to perform CPR. The course at the Southwest Regional Trauma Conference is to train medical professionals to be Stop the Bleed course instructors on Wednesday, August 1, from 3-5 p.m., at the JW Marriott Starr Pass. The instructors will be able to take the course back to their individual communities. The next course for the general public is Tuesday, August 14, at 6 p.m., at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson.
