TOPIC: “Recovery from Hip Fracture: What We Have Learned Over the Past 30+ Years and Directions for Future Research and Practice”
SPEAKER: Jay Magaziner, PhD, M.S.Hyg. | University of Maryland
Dr. Magaziner is professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and director of the University of Maryland’s Center for Research on Aging. His research in aging focuses on three interrelated areas: the consequences of hip fracture, population health and health outcomes, and methods for studying older populations. The major focus of this work is to identify ways of enhancing functioning and improving the quality of life for older persons. His studies include examining changes in function, bone and muscle following hip fracture, and the design and implementation of interventions to improve outcomes from hip fractures. He is recognized for his leadership and expertise in the epidemiology of aging. He has been continuously funded by the National Institute on Aging since 1983, and has received two consecutive MERIT Awards from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), a unit of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in recognition of his contributions to our understanding of recovery from hip fracture. He also directs the University of Maryland’s Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center, funded by the NIA. He has published extensively in internationally recognized journals and has served as a reviewer for the Veterans Administration (VA), the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration (ADAMHA), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and the NIH. Dr. Magaziner holds a doctorate in human development and social science from the University of Chicago and a master's of science degree in hygiene (M.S.Hyg.) in epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.
SEMINAR INFORMATION:
The Aging and Resilience Seminar Series is designed to facilitate aging research and to foster new generations of investigators at the University of Arizona to address significant aging research questions. The seminar will bring UA researchers together to create synergies by sharing research findings and research plans. The series will also provide opportunities for UA researchers to meet and to hear from lead investigators of aging and resilience in other research institutions, specifically Pepper Centers. These activities are the core of the CHiiLi program – the Consortium to Halt Injury and Infection in older adults Leading to Independence.
