Faculty Candidate Presentation

Dr. Windy Alonso is a post-doctoral research associate in the College of Nursing at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She received her bachelor’s degree in biology from Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, Pa. She pursued nursing as a second career, obtaining an associate’s degree in nursing from Northampton Community College, Bethlehem, Pa., and completing her BSN at DeSales University, Center Valley, Pa. 

While at Penn State University, Dr. Alonso worked on an R01-funded study examining the palliative care needs of individuals with heart failure and their family caregivers. Dr. Alonso’s pre-doctoral work was supported by a National Research Service Award (NRSA) Predoctoral Fellowship from the National Institutes of Nursing Research. Dr. Alonso’s program of research is focused on improving outcomes for individuals with heart failure and multiple chronic conditions through innovative and enhanced self-management strategies.

Dr. Alonso is principle investigator of multiple current grants. The first is a Nursing Research Grant from the Heart Failure Society of America to confirm her dissertation findings and assess the feasibility of delivering a remote patient monitoring intervention to individuals with heart failure and diabetes. The second is from the Rural Nurse Organization to explore cardiac rehabilitation access for individuals with heart failure in rural Nebraska. She was recognized as a National Rural Heath Association Rural Health Fellow and a Nebraska Action Coalition 40 Under 40 Emerging Nurse Leader in 2018.
