With two open house sessions for physicians, faculty and staff of the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson and Banner – University Medical Center Tucson complete on April 4, plans move on to the public preview, which coincides with Cyclovia’s April 7 event in central Tucson; a VIP event on April 11, and the official grand opening for patient care on April 22.
The UA Health Sciences community, neighbors and the public at large are welcome to enjoy the Cyclovia/Living Streets Alliance festivities, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., which begin and end at the front entrance to the hospital’s new nine-story tower, completed at a cost of $446 million.
Banner – University Medicine is the lead sponsor for Cyclovia’s three-mile, car-free bike and walking route to the Arts Warehouse District and back. In addition to tours of the new tower, there will be live music, food, a zip line and a host of family-friendly activities as part of this ever-popular community event with the Living Streets Alliance. With the 670,000-square-foot tower expansion, Banner – UMC Tucson’s capacity increases from 479 to 649 licensed beds. Adult intensive care unit (ICU) beds, always in high demand at the hospital, increase by 96 new beds.
The new tower, which includes $50 million in new patient-care equipment and computer technology, replaces older sections of the original hospital building, which opened in 1971 as University Hospital.

For the UA/Banner staff open house on April 4, a morning session ran from 7-10 a.m. and an evening session from 5-9 p.m. The new cafeteria provided a variety of refreshments and beverages, visitors got to sign a large poster of the new tower and take part in a photo booth, T-shirts were passed out, and tours were provided on the second, third, fifth and eight floors. Musical entertainment was provided by Mariachi Tesoro de Tucson in the morning and the Heart & Soul band in the evening.
