After completing medical school and internal medicine training at the University of Missouri, Dr. Fred Gorelick trained as a fellow at Yale in gastroenterology. Following his clinical training, he began basic science training with Yale cellular biologist Dr. James Jamieson. During that period, Dr. Gorelick described calcium-calmodulin dependent protein kinase II and subsequently worked with Dr. Paul Greengard (Rockefeller University) to examine the enzyme's mechanism of activation, a response critical to neuronal memory. His later work has focused on mechanisms of acute pancreatits and how digestive enzymes, such as trypsin, are activated within the pancreas during this disease.

The Henry J. and Joan W. Binder Professor of Medicine (Digestive Diseases) and of Cell Biology, Dr. Gorelick sees patients with gastrointestinal diseases at the VA Medical Center in West Haven, Conn. He is also deputy director for the Yale MD-PhD Program and directs a year-long course for the group that links basic science to clinical disease. He also has been director of the Yale Program in Investigative Gastroenterology for over 10 years. His laboratory at the VA studies molecular mechanisms related to acute pancreatitis with a goal of developing tools that prevent or lessen disease.

Among his many honors and awards, Dr. Gorelick received the Veterans Administration’s Senior Clinical Scientist Award and the American Gastroenterological Association’s Lifetime Mentorship Award in 2019 as well as the AGA’s Research Mentor Award in Pancreatic Diseases in 2018. In 2008, he also received the William Go Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Pancreatic Association, of which he is a past president. He has served on multiple study sections and grant review and other committees for the APA, AGA, VA, Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
