It was an exciting afternoon, Wednesday, June 26, for the celebration and presentation of the Lura Hanekamp Dedicated Staff Award of Excellence for employees of the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson.
Held in HSIB Learning Commons Rooms 305 & 306, 3:30-5 p.m., there were 12 nominees. Among them from the Department of Medicine were:
- Cathy (Mia) Gonzales* | Executive Assistant, Lead, Sarver Heart Center/Division of Cardiology
- Brenda Lambert | Program Coordinator, Senior, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, and
- Courtney Smith | Accountant, Senior, Department of Medicine Office of Finance
*Mia Gonzales moved in May from the College of Medicine – Tucson/Medicine Administration team.
Other nominees included: Brenna Chabolla Stauffer, COM-T Academic Affairs, Executive Assistant; Tonya Fotheringham, Department of Immunobiology, HR Assistant III; Denise Garrett, COM-T Continuing Medical Education, Program Coordinator, Senior; Jackie Gomez, Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine, Administrative Associate; Derek Honeyman, COM-T Student Affairs, Learning Specialist; Jacqueline Laird, Department of Physiology, Coordinator, Administration/Personnel/Faculty Affairs; and Karen Shotwell, Department of Anesthesiology, Business Manager, Senior.
The final honorees, or winners, of the 2024 Lura Hanekamp Dedicated Staff Award of Excellence were: Bertha Corrales, Department of Physiology, Program Coordinator, Senior, and Jessica Holmgren, Department of Surgery, Human Resources Generalist II.
Michael M.I. Abecassis, MD, MBA, the Humberto and Czarina Lopez Endowed Dean, College of Medicine – Tucson, and professor, Departments of Surgery and Immunobiology, presented the nominee certificates and final awards. The winning honor comes with a monetary award that celebrates exceptional staff who have made notable contributions in support of the College’s mission.
About Lura Hanekamp
Lura Hanekamp was part of the College of Medicine – Tucson family for 30 years. She served as an administrative associate in the Department of Physiology until her untimely death in 2010. Her husband, William J. Hanekamp, created an endowment in honor of his late wife to acknowledge and recognize COM-T staff, like Lura, who dedicate their careers to serving fellow staff, students and faculty.
