About the Presenter
Physician-researcher Dr. Juanita Merchant joined the faculty at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson in 2018. She earned her MD and PhD in 1984 from Yale University School of Medicine, where she was the first African-American to earn a dual degree in medicine and cell biology. She completed her internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital and a clinical fellowship at UCLA. Her research focuses on molecular biology of gastric cancers, regulation of gastrointestinal growth, and colon cancer. Her lab studies include the role of bacterial colonization in the development of chronic atrophic gastritis, and the role of ZBP-89 in polyp formation. Among Dr. Merchant’s many honors, she was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies in 2008, joined the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017, and was awarded the Funderburg Research Award in Gastric Cancer, Distinguished Achievement Award in Basic Science and Distinguished Mentor Award from the American Gastroenterological Association.
