William Balke, M.D., from Washington University in St. Louis, presents 'Oh, be still my beating heart': A Novel Ca2+-permeable Na+ Channel in Heart.
Dr. Bill Balke is the Chief of Cardiology at the John Cochran VA Medical Center, Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine of the Washington University School of Medicine, an Investigator in the Cardiovascular Research Center of the Washington University School of Medicine, and an Investigator in the Cardiac Bioelectricity and Arrhythmia Center, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Balke graduated from Temple University School of Medicine and trained in internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He trained in cardiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, clinical cardiac electrophysiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and molecular physiology in the Department of Physiology at the University of Maryland.
Dr. Balke has a longstanding commitment to mentored career development mechanisms. His research program has provided the platform for mentored experiences for a number of NIH F & K award (F31, F32, & K08, K23, K25, K01) recipients who have gone on to productive careers in academic medicine and industry. In addition, this program has also provided the substrate for several NIH-funded institutional training programs in cardiovascular physiology (NIH T32 awards), integrative physiology (NIH T32 award), women’s health (NIH K12 award, Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH)) and an NIH Roadmap K12 program for an interdisciplinary training program to prepare junior faculty for successful careers in clinical and translational research. Over the past decade, Dr. Balke has served as chairperson for the several of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) career development special emphasis panels/study sections including the Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Program (K08), Mentored Patient-oriented Research Career Development Program (K23), and the Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00)). He was the inaugural chairperson of the NHLBI’s institutional T32 study section.
