Dr. Jennifer Barton Named Director of BIO5 Institute

After a national search, Dr. Jennifer Barton has been named director of the UA BIO5 Institute. A professor of biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, optical sciences, and agricultural and biosystems engineering, she joined the UA faculty in 1998. She served as BIO5 assistant director from 2009-12, and became interim director in 2015. Her research is on translational biomedical optics, and prevention and early detection of cancer…

Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation Sponsors UA Lecture on Interstitial Lung Disease, Dec. 8

The UA pulmonary division will host a lecture Friday, Dec. 8, 12:30-2:30 p.m., on interstitial lung disease (ILD) sponsored by the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation in BIO5 Room 103. Speaking will be Dr. Evans Fernández, associate professor with National Jewish Health’s ILD Program and Autoimmune Lung Center. Dr. Sachin Chaudhary, ILD program director at the UA – College of Medicine – Tucson, noted the local program is among 40 nationally that belong to the foundation’s PFF Care Center Network…

AMES Travel Grants to Present Medical Education Research – Deadline for 1st Cycle, Dec. 1

The Academy of Medical Education Scholars at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson announced that the application deadline for the fall cycle of travel grants will be Friday, Dec. 1, for faculty, staff and trainees to present on their medical education research. Requests will be considered up to $750. Reimbursements must be filed within 90 days of travel. A dozen or more applications are expected to be approved…

Native American Cancer Prevention Issues Call for Funding Proposals

To identify collaborative cancer-related research projects for funding to start Sept. 1, 2019 (pending NIH approval), the Partnership for Native American Cancer Prevention invites Letters of Intent from interested investigator teams. The NACP is working to define and eliminate obstacles to health equity in areas of Native American cancer incidence, mortality, survivorship, and representation. UA-Led Study on How Insulin Controls Glucose Uptake Picked for Cover of Proteomics Journal

An article coauthored by UA researchers—including Drs. Paul Langlais and Larry Mandarino—in the UA Division of Endocrinology affiliated with the UAHS Center for Disparities in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, made the October 2017 cover of the journal Molecular & Cellular Proteomics. A paper based on the UA-led study into how insulin controls glucose uptake by cells published in the issue reveals the discovery of a new series of protein networks and identifies new biology that may have broader disease implications…
