The University of Arizona Department of Medicine hosts its third annual research poster night event to recognize work across the UA Department of Medicine by faculty physicians and researchers who serve as principal investigators on numerous projects financed by federal grants and additional funding to develop innovative therapies and other solutions to many of the world’s most challenging and debilitating health issues.
Cancer used to be thought of as a disease of the anatomy, but these days it increasingly is understood as a disease of the genes — one that theoretically can be treated with drugs engineered to target the genetic mutations driving a patient’s cancer.
Atherosclerotic disease, the slow and silent hardening and narrowing of the arteries, is a leading cause of mortality worldwide, responsible for more than 15 million deaths each year, including an estimated 610,000 people in the United States.
