UArizona COVID-19 Webinars to Help Recognize, Resolve Isolation’s Impact on Mental Health

TUCSON, Ariz. – Humans are social creatures and the isolation caused by sheltering-in-place can impact our mental health. That’s very significant when you consider the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found 36% of the U.S. population is experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression disorder as a result of social distancing and stay-at-home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Superfund Research Center Receives $10.6M to Study Mining Waste, Arsenic-Diabetes Link

TUCSON, Ariz. — Working to understand mine waste systems and their relationship to human and environmental health, the University of Arizona Superfund Research Center will explore the link between chronic exposure to arsenic and the development of diabetes, thanks to a $10.6 million grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

One Small Molecule, Potential Giant Step to Improve Cognitive Function

TUCSON, Ariz. – With only five available drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat Alzheimer’s disease – and no drugs to prevent or cure it – the National Institute on Aging has awarded a $6.1 million grant to the Center for Innovation in Brain Science at the University of Arizona Health Sciences to investigate a novel approach to treat the disease.

UArizona Testing App to Alert Students, Employees Exposed to COVID-19

TUCSON, Ariz. – As part of its plan to bring students and employees back to campus in the fall, the University of Arizona is preparing to offer the opt-in Covid Watch smartphone app, so that campus community members can notify each other anonymously if they may have been exposed to COVID-19. Arizona is the first state to start testing of the app, which began this week.
