Presenter:
Dr. Richard Panush is a professor of medicine emeritus, Division of Rheumatology, Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. A native of Detroit, he earned a bachelor’s (1965) and medical degree (1967) at the University of Michigan. He completed his internal medicine residency training at Duke University and his fellowship training in rheumatology and clinical immunology at the Robert Breck and Peter Bent Brigham Hospitals (now Brigham and Women’s Hospital) at Harvard Medical School. In 1973, he moved to Gainesville, Florida, where he became chief of the Division of Clinical Immunology, Rheumatology and Allergy at the University of Florida College of Medicine and the affiliated VA Medical Center (1976-1988). In 1989, he left to become Department of Medicine chair and program director at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, N.J. where he also was a professor and vice chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry – New Jersey Medical School, now part of Rutgers University (1989-98), and a professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York (1999-2008). He accepted an appointment as professor of medicine at USC’s Keck School of Medicine in 2010.
In 2022, he received the Distinguished Medical Educator Award from the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine and Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine, having served as a residency or fellowship director for 40 of his 50 years in academic medicine and division or department head for 35 years.
Dr. Panush has maintained a passionate interest in the interface of medicine with the humanities throughout his career. As the American College of Rheumatology’s Ethics Committee chair, he played a critical role in identifying Nazi physicians recognized with eponymic honors and having their names removed from diseases with which they were associated. They should be remembered “in obloquy and shame for their violation of transcendent ethical and moral responsibilities,” he told The Rheumatologist.
