The UA College of Medicine – Tucson, UA Center on Aging and Banner Health—are highlighted in a recent Commonwealth Fund report on “Transforming Care – In Focus: Spreading Innovative Approaches to Dementia Care” that was released just prior to the end of 2017. An uptick in reported cases of Valley fever indicates a likely sharp increase in infections next year. At the same time, federal clearance for a rapid assay test developed with assistance from the University of Arizona should help reduce delays in diagnosing the respiratory fungal disease caused by spores found in area soils.

After a national search, Dr. Jennifer Barton has been named director of the UA BIO5 Institute. A professor of biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, optical sciences, and agricultural and biosystems engineering, she joined the UA faculty in 1998. She served as BIO5 assistant director from 2009-12, and became interim director in 2015. Her research is on translational biomedical optics, and prevention and early detection of cancer…

Breast cancer strikes 1 out of 8 women in her lifetime, but strategies exist that can reduce the risk of developing the disease and detect it earlier, when it is most treatable, according to an expert at the University of Arizona Cancer Center.
