UA Experts: Valley Fever Cases See Major Spike in November; New Rapid Assay Test Should Help Reduce Diagnosis Delays

An uptick in reported cases of Valley fever indicates a likely sharp increase in infections next year. At the same time, federal clearance for a rapid assay test developed with assistance from the University of Arizona should help reduce delays in diagnosing the respiratory fungal disease caused by spores found in area soils.

After a national search, Dr. Jennifer Barton has been named director of the UA BIO5 Institute. A professor of biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, optical sciences, and agricultural and biosystems engineering, she joined the UA faculty in 1998. She served as BIO5 assistant director from 2009-12, and became interim director in 2015. Her research is on translational biomedical optics, and prevention and early detection of cancer…

An open house breakfast for patients and the public is set for Monday, Dec. 11, 7:30-9 a.m., at the new $100-million Banner – University Medicine North outpatient care facility at North Campbell Avenue and Allen Road between the UA Cancer Center Peter & Paula Fasseas Clinic and Ronald McDonald House. Meanwhile, tours for physicians whose clinics are included began Monday. Be sure to sign up with your division’s lead admin. Clinics start moving during winter break, with all fully open by mid-January…
