With a five-year, $1.9 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, researchers at the UA Steele Children's Research Center are seeking a better understanding of the NHE8 protein's role in the development of inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer, and its contribution to the stability of the gut microbiome – the community of bacteria that inhabit the intestines and influence the immune system.

A large, bouquet-shaped molecule called surfactant protein A, or SP-A, may explain why obese asthma patients have harder-to-treat symptoms than their lean and overweight counterparts, reports a new study led by scientists at the University of Arizona and Duke University. Dr. Daniel Persky, associate professor in the UA Division of Hematology and Oncology, associate director of UACC Clinical Investigations and director of the UACC Clinical Trials Office, was instrumental helping raise $150,000 for the local chapter. Incoming University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson residents, chief residents and fellows joined each other Friday, June 23, for the Banner – UMC New Resident Orientation event hosted by the Marriott Tucson University Park Hotel. Across all departments, there are 711 resident physicians in training. Of those, the Internal Medicine program is the largest with 93 at Tucson Campus and 31 at South Campus. See the pictures…
