Kenneth S. Ramos, MD, PhD, PharmB, associate vice president for precision health sciences, has accepted a position as executive director of the Institute of Biosciences and Technology in Houston and assistant vice chancellor for Health Services at the Texas A&M University System.
He will begin his new duties at the end of March, announced Michael Dake, MD, senior vice president of Health Sciences at the University of Arizona and a professor of medical imaging, medicine and surgery, in a memo sent to UA Health Sciences faculty and staff on Tuesday morning, Feb. 19.
“As an accomplished physician-scientist and transformational leader with a depth of experience that spans our tripartite mission of education, research and clinical service, Ken has guided efforts to address health issues of regional and global importance related to genomics, precision medicine, environmental health and toxicology,” Dr. Dake said.
Dr. Ramos, who gave the keynote address on “The Power of Precision Medicine” at last weekend’s Living Healthy With Arthritis Annual Conference and has his primary clinical post in the UA Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, has served in a number of roles since he joined the UAHS in March 2014. While interim dean of the UA College of Medicine – Phoenix, his leadership guided the successful completion of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation in June 2017 and ensured stabilization of the college.
As founding director of the UAHS Center for Applied Genetics and Genomic Medicine, he has been instrumental in developing precision health strategies to improve health care delivery, in partnership with Banner Health and Banner University Medicine—the university’s primary clinical partner through the UAHS colleges of medicine, pharmacy nursing and public health.
In September 2014, Dr. Ramos was appointed program director of the MD/PhD program at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson. Under his guidance, enrollment in the program has grown from four to 26 students in 2019. In addition, Dr. Ramos was the driving force behind the 2016 establishment of a sister MD/PhD program at the UA College of Medicine – Phoenix, which welcomes its sixth student this year.
“The impact Dr. Ramos has had during his tenure here has been remarkable and we sincerely hope to continue a strong relationship with him in the future. Please join me in thanking Ken for his leadership, passion and dedication to the University of Arizona Health Sciences,” Dr. Dake said.
