Triple Chemotherapy Regimen for Biliary Cancer Patients Focus of UA-Led Study Published in JAMA Oncology

Illustration of Dr. Rachna Shroff with JAMA Oncology logo and other publications in JAMA NetworkKudos to Rachna Shroff, MD, section chief of Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology at the University of Arizona Cancer Center and an associate professor of the UA Division of Hematology and Oncology in the UA Department of Medicine, for her first author position on an paper posted to JAMA Oncology on April 18.

The article, “Gemcitabine, Cisplatin, and nab-Paclitaxel for the Treatment of Advanced Biliary Tract Cancers,” involves a Phase II clinical trial that tested triplet chemotherapy for the first time in biliary cancer patients. The study showed an overall survival that was higher than what has historically been seen.

This has led to a Phase III study, for which she is the national principal investigator.

Dr. Shroff is also the UA Cancer Center’s GI Disease-Oriented Team leader and Data Safety Monitoring Board chair. She joined the faculty at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson in spring 2018. She served previously as associate professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where she specialized in pancreatic and biliary cancers.
