The latest Cancer Bytes video from the University of Arizona Cancer Center puts Division of Dermatology Chief Clara Curiel-Lewandrowski, MD, in the spotlight discussing skin cancer risks related to melanoma.
She notes that more than 5 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer primarily associated with UV exposure and that the UV index of two Arizona cities are ranked among the top five in the world in terms of UV exposure.
In particular, Dr. Curiel-Lewandrowski, who also is the center’s interim research director and co-director of its Skin Cancer Institute, focuses in on two types of skin cancer. Non-melanoma types are known as basal cell carcinomas and account for about 4.7 million cases. The second, the melanoma type, are squamous cell carcinomas, which are closer to 100,000 per year.
While it’s great to enjoy the outdoors, she added, the important thing is to avoid the most intense sun periods of the day, where possible, meaning early morning or late afternoon. And it’s important to wear sunscreen and sun protective clothing, much more available today than it was 15 years ago, she said.
Dr. Curiel-Lewandrowski also appeared in another recent Cancer Center video entitled, “Warning Signs of Skin Cancer,” that accompanied a story from the center’s website: “Skin Cancer Institute helps keep Arizona safe through prevention, early detection, treatment” (May 17, 2024).
