Combined WLSC/DOM Research Seminar, March 9, to Feature Cleveland Clinic Respiratory Expert

The Winter Lung Series Conference and DOM Research Seminar Series lectures for Thursday, March 9, have been combined, which means a change of venue for the event from the BIO5 Institute to Room 5403 of the UA College of Medicine – Tucson.

The speaker is Serpil Erzurum, MD, a professor and chair of the Department of Pathobiology at the Lerner Research Institute and the Alfred Lerner Memorial Chair in Innovation Biomedical Research at the Case Western University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio.

A world-renowned translational scientist on respiratory diseases, she is also a staff physician at the Respiratory Institute and director of the Clinical Research Unit at the Cleveland Clinic, as well as the chair for the Assembly on Allergy, Immunology and Inflammation at the American Thoracic Society.

Dr. Erzurum’s topic is “Metabolism and Hypoxia in Pulmonary Vascular Disease.” Her talk runs from noon to 1 p.m. A light lunch will be served similar in style to the Medicine Grand Rounds.

The Winter Lung Series Conferences (WLSC), held in conjunction with the UA Health Sciences Asthma and Airway Disease Research Center and UA BIO5 Institute, brings in nationally and internationally renowned physician-scientists to discuss the latest research in various fields of pulmonary medicine and share those emerging ideas and clinical advances with our faculty, fellows and residents in training at the UA Health Sciences colleges, as well as community physicians. This DOM Research Seminar Series began in September 2016 and occurs on the second Thursday of the month during the academic year, typically pairing a junior and senior investigator from our faculty who are with different divisions to ensure a broad variety of topics are covered. Previously scheduled speaker, Bhaskar Banerjee, MD, UA professor and program director, Gastroenterology Fellowship, will be rescheduled. His co-speaker, Christian Bime, MD, UA assistant professor of medicine and medical director, Medical ICU, Banner – University Medical Center Tucson, spoke at the DOM Research Seminar on Feb. 9 (see link below).
