During his PhD studies, Dr. Shang characterized MAGUK GK domain as a new phosphor-binding protein domain which plays important roles in various cellular process such as cell polarity, cell division, synapse assembly, etc. He systematically studied various molecular mechanisms of GK domain in these cellular processes. He has also characterized a number of molecular assembles that facilitates a phase transition in neuron excitatory synapse, which may be one of the key process during synapse formation and signaling. His discoveries explain the molecular pathways that are involved in various cancers and psychiatric disorders.
