Medical researchers, faculty and staff from the University Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson gathered in a light rain on a chilly fall evening Tuesday, Oct. 16, for the 2018 Innovations and Inventions research fair.
The event spotlighted new and up-and-coming basic scientists and clinicians and their research endeavors and success stories. It took place 5-7 p.m. at the Walkway of Wellness outside Drachman Hall and included appetizers and beverages as refreshments. A dozen posters for investigators chosen to present also were on display.
Among UA Department of Medicine faculty presenting were UA Sarver Heart Center member Khadijah Breathett, MD, a cardiologist and advanced heart failure specialist, and UA Division of Gastroenterology Chief Juanita Merchant, MD, PhD, a renowned physician-scientist studying biomarkers for colon cancer and other ailments of the digestive system. Dr. Breathett’s topic was, “Reducing racial/ethnic and gender disparities in heart failure.” Dr. Merchant’s was “A biomarker of helicobacter induced gastric metaplasia and gastric cancer.”
