Chief residents for the next academic year in the University of Arizona Department of Medicine’s three residency programs have been announced, with additional kudos, too, to those in the internal medicine programs who already were tabbed for the coming year.
UA College of Medicine – Tucson Internal Medicine Residency Programs
University Campus | 2019-20
At the University Campus internal medicine residency program at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson and Banner – University Medical Center Tucson, the following residents will stay an extra year to serve as chief residents in 2019-20 (along with where they completed their medical degree):
- Nathan Coffman, MD — University of Colorado School of Medicine, Aurora, Colo., 2016;
- Joshua K. Cox, MD — Medical school: University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Buffalo, N.Y., 2016;
- Jessica Vondrak, MD — Medical school: The Commonwealth Medical College, Scranton, Pa., 2016; and
- Richard “Ben” Young, MD — Medical school: University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Oklahoma City, Okla., 2016.

At the University Campus internal medicine residency program at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson and Banner – UMC Tucson, these residents will stay an extra year to serve as chief residents in 2020-21: 
- Morgan Bailey, MD — Medical School: University of Texas School of Medicine, San Antonio, 2017;
- Rory Bouzigard, MD — Medical School: Louisiana State University School of Medicine, New Orleans, 2017;
- John Dicken, MD — Medical School: University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, 2017; and
- Zain Mehdi, DO — Medical School: Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Downers Grove, Ill., 2017.
Outgoing 2018-19 chief residents and where they’re headed include: Kelly Barnett, MD (Internist, Vancouver, Canada); Kris Kumar, DO (Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland); Anthony Witten, DO (Hospitalist, Banner – UMC Tucson); and Ryan Wong, MD (Nephrology Fellowship Program, University of Washington, Seattle).

The outgoing 2018-19 South Campus chief resident, Roberto Swazo, MD, heads next to Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, where he’ll be a fellow in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program.
UA Advanced Dermatology Residency Program

Next year's Dermatology chief residents: 
- Spencer Bertoch, MD — Medical school: University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, 2016;
- J.P. Foshee, MD — Medical school: Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, 2016; and
- Alex Glazer, MD — Medical school: Rush Medical College, Chicago, 2015.
As for outgoing 2018-19 Dermatology chief residents, Jeff Krase, MD, PharmD, and Marilyn Wickenheiser, MD: Dr. Krase has been hired by the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System and its expected he’ll get an appointment as an assistant professor with the UA Division of Dermatology and will teach residents and medical students there; Dr. Wickenheiser is headed to the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, where she’ll also teach residents and medical students.
