Marvin Slepian, MD, was inducted as a Regents’ Professor Jan. 13, 2020. Dr. Slepian is founder and director of the Arizona Center for Accelerated Biomedical Innovation.

The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson’s Juanita Merchant, MD, PhD, has received the 2020 Distinguished Mentor Award from the American Gastroenterological Association. A professor and chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Dr. Merchant is a cancer biology program researcher at the UArizona Cancer Center, an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, and a renowned physician-scientist who has advanced the understanding of the gastric and colonic responses to chronic inflammation leading to gastric or colon cancer.
Lawrence Mandarino, PhD, professor in the Department of Medicine, was one of six faculty members named as a 2020 Faculty Mentoring Award winner at the May General Faculty Meeting of the College of Medicine – Tucson. Dr. Mandarino, chief for the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism and director of the UArizona Center for Disparities in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, has three decades of experience mentoring the next generation of physician-scientists and medical researchers, from high school students to faculty.
