Medical Student Education

Medical students at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson participate in a variety of clinical and educational experiences through our division.

They also have access to elective courses relating to all subspecialties within the UA Department of Medicine (see those with the prefix “MEDI”). Refer to the College of Medicine – Tucson course catalog for specific courses and descriptions. Current medical students should also explore related opportunities offered by student clubs (including the UA Internal Medicine Student Association). Learn more at the MedCats website (NetID login required).

Regarding Clerkship and Sub-Internship (Sub-I or SI) opportunities for third- and fourth-years, please contact Kristina Waters at KEW3@email.arizona.edu

Residency Rotation

Internal Medicine residents, during their rotation within our division, get an opportunity to work with our faculty in an inpatient and outpatient setting, including at the Endoscopy Labs at both Banner – University Medical Center (UMC) Tucson as well as Banner – UMC South and at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System’s flagship Tucson hospital. They gain additional clinical exposure with the UA Liver Research Institute, which is affiliated with our division.

Fellowships

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology offers a three-year fellowship program in gastroenterology and hepatology with two or three fellows per year. As our programs at the University of Arizona are multidisciplinary in nature, we offer opportunities to learn and train both with our excellent faculty but also with other subspecialists and surgeons within the UA College of Medicine as well as various centers of excellence, including our renowned UA Cancer Center and UA Liver Research Institute.
