First-year residents known as interns in the University of Arizona Internal Medicine Residency Program – Tucson Campus got a jump start on their July 1 start date as physician trainees in the Department of Medicine with an orientation session held in Lecture Hall Room 5403 on Monday, June 17.
Just as the DOM is the largest department at the college with about 275 faculty members, the residency program is the largest at either the College of Medicine – Tucson or Phoenix with 122 residents.
Staff – including program manager Mary Gosciminski, coordinators Jazmine Aguilar and Monica Jimenez, and admin and credentialing specialist Julie Forte – scrambled to make sure everyone had their white coats, stethoscopes, pagers and schedules.
And DOM Vice Chair of Education Amy Sussman, MD, a professor in the Division of Nephrology, its fellowship program director and director of the DOM Internal Medicine Clerkship, gave them the quick overview and tips on a successful residency experience. Her first lesson: “Teaching Expectations for Clerkship Students.”
