The Department of Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson enjoyed an excellent turnout for its 2024 Faculty Promotion Celebration, hosted Oct. 9 at the Arizona Inn. You’ll find a selection of photos from the event displayed below as a mini-photo gallery.
Those advancing this past year included three faculty members from the Division of Cardiology, two from the Division of Infectious Diseases, and one each from the Division of Hematology & Oncology, Division of Inpatient Medicine, Division of Nephrology, and Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, or PACCS.
Department of Medicine Chair James K. Liao, MD, compliments promoted faculty at start of celebration event held in their honor.
The promotions, announced May 28 in the DOM News (where you’ll find details on each of the promotees and the progression of their careers), involve the following faculty members:
- Mohanad Al-Obaidi, MD, MPH – now an associate professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases.
- Tara F. Carr, MD, now a professor, allergy section chief and director of the Allergy & Immunology Fellowship Program in the PACCS division, medical director of the Adult Allergy Program at Banner – University Medicine Tucson, as well as chair of the college’s chapter of the Academy of Medical Education Scholars, or AMES. In addition, she’s co-principal investigator on the NIH-funded Binational Early Asthma and Microbiome Study, or BEAMS (click here for 2023 YouTube video of her presenting on BEAMS), and the Precision Interventions for Severe and/or Exacerbation-Prone Asthma (PrecISE) Network study, and a co-investigator on the Tucson Children’s Respiratory Study, or TCRS, and the Albuquerque-based Community Partnerships to Advance Science for Society, or ComPASS, study.
- Michel T. Corban, MD – now an associate professor in the Division of Cardiology.
- Sima Ehsani, MD – now an associate professor in the Division of Hematology & Oncology and the Breast Clinical Research Team leader at the UArizona Cancer Center, and a member of the City of Hope Clinical Cancer Genomics Community of Practice.
- Justin F. Hayes, MD – now an associate professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, co-director of its Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, a principal investigator on the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) Research Network and participant in the Mycoses Study Group and Education & Research Consortium, or MSGERC, which participates in clinical trials related to fungal infections.
- Olivia Hung, MD, PhD (not present) – an associate professor in the Division of Cardiology, Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship program director, Sarver Heart Center member, and associate block director for the Clinical Reasoning Course at the College of Medicine – Tucson.
- Neha Jaswal, MD – now an associate professor in the Division of Inpatient Medicine.
- Elizabeth B. Juneman, MD – now a professor in the Division of Cardiology, Sarver Heart Center member and director of the Heart Failure Program, as well as a key faculty lecturer in the Cardio-Pulmonary-Renal Block for first-year medical students at the college. She was formerly interim division chief and center director prior to the arrival in May of Hesham Sadek, MD, PhD, now serving in those roles.
- Bijin Thajudeen, MD – now a professor in the Division of Nephrology, he serves as associate director of the division’s research section; DEI champion and member, DOM DEI Committee; director of Inpatient Nephrology Services at Banner – University Medicine Tucson and medical director of the Inpatient Dialysis Unit at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson; medical director, DCI Dialysis Center, Douglas, Arizona; and an investigator on two clinical trials: Regen-006 (PI, sponsored by RegenMed Ltd.) and the Kidney Precision Medicine Project (co-PI, sponsored by NIH).
