The Division of Nephrology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and Banner – University Medical Center Tucson and South facilities provides a range of clinical services for the comprehensive treatment for kidney disease and its prevention. These include:
General Nephrology: We provide consultation for patients with a wide range of acid base and electrolyte disturbances throughout the hospital.
ICU Nephrology: An important strength of our group is our emphasis on the care of patients with acute kidney injury in multiple intensive care units (ICUs) throughout the hospital where we practice.
Glomerular Diseases: Our faculty members have a special interest in diseases that cause an inflammation of the glomerulus such as membranous glomerulonephritis, rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) — which are acute inflammation of the kidney, typically caused by an immune response. A close working relationship with our renal pathologist is at the core of our success and expertise in this area.
Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation: As the only kidney and pancreas transplant program in Southern Arizona, we are actively growing this program for our community working closely with the UA Department of Surgery. We particularly want to recognize our community nephrology partners — without whose support we would not have been able to provide this service.
Over the past decade, about 1,200 kidney transplant procedures (with nearly 2,500 since our program’s inception) have been performed at Banner – UMC Tucson, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).
Inpatient Hemodialysis: Faculty members from the division provide care to a growing number of acute hemodialysis patients at our two acute units at Banner – UMC Tucson and Banner – UMC South hospitals. We are particularly grateful to our partners at Dialysis Clinics Inc. (DCI) for their support in this area.
Outpatient Hemodialysis: Our physicians care for an increasing population of hemodialysis patients at our seven outpatient hemodialysis clinics. Our chronic hemodialysis population has increased by more than 50 percent in the last year. We are medical directors at four Dialysis Clinics Inc. units in southeastern Arizona and would like to recognize the amazing partnership with DCI that allows us to provide high quality clinical care to our dialysis patients.
Home Dialysis: We have focused on trying to maximize the numbers of patients that are offered home dialysis in view of the independence and the relative lack of food and fluid restrictions that this renal replacement modality can offer our patients. We are particularly proud of our nocturnal hemodialysis program.
Specialty Out-Patient Clinics: We are in the process of developing multidisciplinary clinics in uremic cardiovascular disease, kidney stone disease, vascular access and lupus nephritis.
