Dermatology

The University of Arizona Division of Dermatology at the College of Medicine – Tucson got its start in 1973 when Peter Lynch, MD, a University of Michigan dermatologist was named the first member of the section. Also serving as vice chair of the UA Department of Medicine, he stayed until 1986, leaving to become chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Minnesota and later at the University of California - Davis.

Our three-year residency program began in 1976, and currently has nine physicians in training.

Our team of dermatologists provides outstanding clinical care to patients and specialize in diagnosing and treating skin conditions and diseases and managing both benign and malignant skin tumors.

According to the American Cancer Society, in 2019:

•  96,480 people in the United States will be diagnosed with melanomas of the skin, including 57,220 men and 39,260 women, and
• 7,230 people in the United States will die from melanomas of the skin, including 4,740 men and 2,490 women.

As part of the UA Department of Medicine, we work in an interdisciplinary fashion with other UA subspecialties and departments, including geriatrics, hematology and oncology, rheumatology and surgery. In education, research and clinical matters, we also work closely with the UA Cancer Center and its Skin Cancer Institute on both the treatment and prevention of skin cancer—the most common form of cancer.

We also augment our teaching and clinical capabilities by partnering with dermatology specialists in the community to cover our patients’ cosmetic, medical and surgical care needs with respect to skin, hair and nails.
