The University South Campus General Nephrology Consult service is strictly a consultative service that is based at our University South Campus hospital, a 245-bed hospital including 13 ICU beds, located in South Tucson. The fellow will spend 2 months during the first year of clinical training and 2.5 months during their second year of clinical training at this site. The consult team will typically see 6-10 new consults weekly and maintain a service of 6-14 patients. Similar to the University main campus, the fellow will oversee the daily management and diagnostic evaluation of all patients on whom the service consults and acquire a working knowledge of how to manage acid-base and electrolyte disorders, acute and chronic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis, intoxications, care of the hospitalized ESRD patient, and other renal-related diseases in both the floor and ICU setting. The fellow will become adept at initiation of dialysis, modality selection, and prescription in patients with acute kidney injury, and placement of temporary hemodialysis catheters. Both continuous (CRRT) and intermittent hemodialysis therapies are offered at this site. A working knowledge and understanding of health disparities and its impact to patient care is emphasized at this venue.Given the smaller sized consult service, this site offers time for more in-depth teaching, additional time for research and scholarly activity, and provides the perfect venue to strengthen the fellow’s teaching skillset given the interaction with multiple trainees from a variety of residency programs.
