ICU Nephrology Consultation Service BUMCT

The University ICU Consult service is a consultative service based at the University hospital, Southern Arizona’s only Level 1 trauma center for both adult and pediatric patients. The fellow will spend 2-2.5 months during their first year and 2 months during their second year of clinical training at this site. The ICU consult team will typically see 8-16 new consults weekly and maintain a service of 8-20 patients. This is an exciting, action-packed service where the fellow works in a multidisciplinary fashion along-side colleagues in the medical, surgical, trauma, and cardiac ICU setting (over 60 ICU beds). They become adept at diagnosis and management of AKI, intoxications, placement of temporary hemodialysis catheters, modality selection including continuous (CRRT), intermittent, and prolonged intermittent renal replacement therapies (PIRRT), and prescription management. The fellow will additionally gain exposure to extra-corporeal life support (ECLS/ECMO) techniques and cardiac device therapy (LVAD, total artificial heart, and other mechanical circulatory support devices) in patients with acute and chronic renal disease. Emphasis on effective consultative communication and working in a multidisciplinary fashion is highlighted during this rotation.
