The transplantation service is based at the University Main Campus and functions as a consultative service that works in a multidisciplinary fashion with the Abdominal Transplant surgery service.This site performs both kidney and kidney pancreas transplants with > 120 transplant performed over the past year.Fellows will spend approximately 4-5 months of their clinical training on this service over the course of 2 years.This rotation comprises both an inpatient consultative service as well as an outpatient ambulatory component.During their tenure on service, the fellow will learn the indications and complications of transplantation, the principles of histocompatibility testing in the selection of donor kidneys, and the psychosocial evaluation and impact of transplantation.The fellow will additionally participate in multidisciplinary selection committee and understand the process of assessing suitability for living and deceased donor transplantation. They will acquire a working knowledge of the pharmacology of immunosuppressive drug regimens and complications of such, workup and management of allograft dysfunction (including cellular and antibody-mediated rejection), recurrence of primary disease, and immediate care of the post-operative transplant patient.In addition, the fellow will provide consultative care to patients with non-renal solid organ transplant (liver, lung, and heart) in patients with acute and chronic renal disease in an inpatient setting.
