Application Procedure

Thank you for your interest in the University of Arizona Internal Medicine Residency Program at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson (Banner – UMC Tucson or BUMCT). The University of Arizona Department of Medicine offers residency positions through the National Resident Matching Program. During our 2023-2024 interview season, all interviews will be held virtually. Read on for “Applicant Procedures” or choose from bullets on the left under “Prospective Resident Resources” for additional interview information.

 
Positions are offered through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Applications are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)

As required by the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the following information is available to you on the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson (UACOM-T) Graduate Medical Education Office website and applies to all ACGME-accredited residencies and fellowships at the UACOM-T.  By continuing your candidacy in our selection process, you confirm that you have reviewed these documents and you further acknowledge that you meet all requirements for participation in the UACOM – T residency or fellowship program(s) in which you have applied:

Interviews will be scheduled after review of completed applications. A completed application will consist of the following:

  • ERAS Application
  • Personal Statement
  • Curriculum Vitae or Resume
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation, plus
  • Dean's Letter or Proof of Graduation
  • Medical School Transcripts
  • USMLE or COMLEX plus USMLE scores

Important Application Information:

  • Although there is no set USMLE or COMLEX cut-off score; applicants should score at least 220 on USMLE Step I and Step II to be competitive
  • Applicants should have substantial and credible hands-on clinical experience (not observerships) of at least two months in the US within the last 3 years
  • Applicants should have graduated from medical school within the last five years
  • Applicants with USMLE scores must have taken and passed USMLE Step 2 (CK) by the time the program is required to submit our Rank Order List
  • A typical invited interviewee will be scheduled for a half day of program presentations, interviews, and discussions with housestaff
  • Interviews may be scheduled as early as October, 2023 and as late as January, 2024
  • All hired interns must pass a backgroud check and will need to pass a pre-employment drug screening

As a condition of employment, all new University of Arizona residents must obtain a valid fingerprint clearance card, in accordance with A.R.S. 15-1881, and pass a criminal background check.

International Medical School Graduates:

  • Applicant must have passed USMLE Step 1 & COMLEX Step 1
  • ECFMG must be certified by the start of the program 
  • USMLE Step 2 (CK) must be verified before Match
  • Visa Information: Applicant must enter on a J1 Visa. Unfotunately, Banner University Medical Center does not sponsor any other visas

  • We accept exceptionally qualified International Medical Graduates
  • We only sponsor J1 Visas
  • We require ECFMG certification before start of program
  • Applicants should have graduated from medical school within the last five years
  • Applicants should have substantial and creditable hands-on clinical experiences or at least two months in the US within the last 3 years
  • We do not sponsor observerships
  • We do not have USMLE cut-offs — a competitive score, however, would be above 200 (our average intern score was 229 on step 1 in 2020)
