Within the University of Arizona Department of Medicine, we have 17 fellowships in advanced training in internal medicine subspecialties that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and another in integrative medicine recognized by the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM) and American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS).
Nationwide, the number of internal medicine residents has grown from 24,300 to nearly 28,000 in the decade since the 2008-09 academic year, according to the American Board of Internal Medicine. Meanwhile, the number of fellows in internal medicine subspecialties has grown from 10,599 to 12,038 over that same period. That’s about 43 percent of residents who go on to subspecialty training and 57 percent who become internists.
