Fellowships & Fellowship Matches

Within the University of Arizona Department of Medicine, we have 17 fellowships in advanced training in internal medicine subspecialties that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and another in integrative medicine recognized by the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM) and American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS).

These provide ample opportunity for further training for our residents, many of whom continue on with us as fellows and beyond to faculty posts in clinical and academic medicine as well as for research careers as clinicians or postdoctoral positions with any number of Centers and Institutes affiliated with the department and college.

Nationwide, the number of internal medicine residents has grown from 24,300 to nearly 28,000 in the decade since the 2008-09 academic year, according to the American Board of Internal Medicine. Meanwhile, the number of fellows in internal medicine subspecialties has grown from 10,599 to 12,038 over that same period. That’s about 43 percent of residents who go on to subspecialty training and 57 percent who become internists. The graphic at right shows the distribution of first-year internal medicine fellows by subspecialty (click image to see latest data).

Many of our residents move on to fellowships here and at other respected institutions. Many become hospitalists, whether in an academic or community hospital setting. And many move on to private practice.
